Description: These ferns appear in ponds after spring rains and have adapted to prairies. Their cordlike stems anchor to the mud and the floating fronds resemble 4-leaved clovers. The nutcase spore cases are hard and located at the base of the stalks. They can be found along the shores of rivers and ponds and in ditches and meadows.
